Boo Hoo is the folk music project of Bernhard Karakoulakis. Echoing artists like John K. Samson and Sufjan Stevens, Bernhard’s songs delve into his bicultural Greek-German heritage, weaving tales of belonging and separation. His music captures the essence of living between two worlds, filled with longing and the beauty of transient connections.
In the early 2010s, Bernhard moved to New York, drawn to its diverse antifolk scene. There, he found a community that resonated with his own experiences, where cultural blending and identity complexities were embraced. This period deeply influenced his music, infusing it with the rich narratives of his upbringing.
Returning to Frankfurt, Bernhard focused on composing for Schauspiel Frankfurt and launched „Boo Hoo Live“ via Kickstarter. His latest album, „Fray Willy“ (2024), showcases a refined folk-pop sound, maintaining introspective lyricism and a wondrous outlook.
Collaborations with artists like The Burning Hell and Toby Goodshank, alongside producer Brian Speaker, have shaped Boo Hoo’s distinctive sound. Working from his Frankfurt studio, Bernhard’s music features warm acoustics, intricate guitar work, and bittersweet melodies that blend nostalgia with hope, reflecting the complex beauty of life’s journey.
