Story

Boo Hoo is Bernhard Karakoulakis’s folk project, named after a quirky Nintendo ghost character. His music is a mix of personal tales and introspective tunes, kind of like what you’d hear from John K. Samson or Sufjan Stevens. Having grown up between Greek and German cultures, Bernhard’s songs are about the in-between states of everyday life and their inherent sadness and hopefulness.

When he moved to New York in the early 2010s, he found his groove in the city’s antifolk scene, where blending cultures and exploring identity through music was the norm. This vibe heavily influenced his music. After returning from New York and extensive touring around Europe, he went back to Frankfurt. There, he started working on original pieces for Schauspiel Frankfurt and ran several successful crowdfunding campaigns to finance the making of his albums.

His latest release, “Fray Willy” (2024), shows a shift from his early DIY sounds to something more polished, mixing folk and pop but still keeping the introspective lyrics that make Boo Hoo stand out.

Punkrock Song

Somewhere things move slower than here
If you have a feeling it lasts a long year
The rain is not falling
It seems like it's crawling down the sky

Right beneath their houses
People are burning their trousers
And displace them
And play guitars
And burn all cars

My head's up in the clouds
Flying to the sun
And it won't return
Trying hard to figure out
What all dreams in punkrock were about
Now it's out

I dreamed I was a punkrock boy
And listened to the clash
And died with the guy from that 80s song
In a double decker bus crash

From "Hypermarché" (2008)

Gakutensoku

The night they left I was alone
I was picking up the phone
I looked your number up
The room was dark
The only light came from the park
I always walk through with my dog
Then I saw them on the grass
With a bunch of shopping bags
Looking to the sky
But I was to afraid to guess
That they could leave so I forgot
To tell them goodbye

Nothing ever goes the way it should
Nothing ever turns out as it should be
One day your arrive the next you leave
I'm afraid that you won't be with me
Sitting by the window
And watch the people hurry home

On the sidewalk I can see
Some rabbits that attempt
To cross the concrete street
In the middle of the night
Under blinking traffic lights
I heard their tiny feet

But now the spaceship is arriving
The engine is loud
Their eyes are open wide
They cannot see

Nothing ever goes the way it should
Nothing ever turns out as it should be
One day your arrive the next you leave
I'm afraid that you won't be with me
Sitting in the garden
Waiting for the morning sun
To warm our skins
It's cold again out here

Nothing ever goes the way it should
Nothing ever turns out as it should be
One day your arrive the next you leave
I'm afraid that you won't be with me
And there's no one to talk to
When the robots leave our homes

The Bird

Walking by the river
I found a bird I used to
She sat there by the water
And watched the boats come and go

She watched the helicopters
On their daily patrol flights
In the daylight you can see them
But you just hear them at night

I went over just to ask her if
She could remember me
But with every step I took
She jumoed away until I couldn't see

Her behind the flowers
That moved with every wave
I waded through the water
I found her in an open cage

Could you close the door
And take me home again with you?
I fear the helicopters
I know you don't like them too

You can leave me by your window or
Beside the radio
And I just listen all day
To a travelling show

From "Hypermarché" (2008)

Pete & Pete

When I close my eyes
I see a TV
And we are in front and
We're watching Pete & Pete
All day, All day long

You say, I love the episode
With the always ringing phone
I say, I love it too
But it's rarely shown

So we buy snacks and soda
Coffee and ice cream
The door is always open
And the summer is streaming in

We wait
For our black cat to come back
Until the sky is black
In the living room

Words fly through the room
Pictures in the air
Rain is in my shoes
But i don't care

'Cause it's october now
But it feels like July
And looks like the 70's

While the pictures
Of your books become alive
You blow smoke into the night
As you laugh on your chair

The Secret Mall

I'm walkig through
The shopping mall
And just forgot what I was looking for

It must have something to do
With a car
But I am not sure

Later I will look for my cat
He's been away for some days

Tuesday, Wednesday
Thursday, Friday
Saturday, Sunday
Monday, Tuesday

His brother is lonely and walks 'round the house
To the places he usually stays

My grandpa's working
Everyday
To fix things that aren't broken yet

Lost
half of his brain in an accident
But it's better than to just stay in bed

My father is pointing at what he has done
He looks for his life in his dreams
And when he wakes up he can't remember
And all that's left are leaving scenes

From "Hypermarché" (2008)

Lady Di

Three weeks after Lady Di
Got killed in that late August night
We packed our bags, put on our shoes
Left early in the afternoon
We drove off to Disneyland
To shake the puppets clumsy hands
Paris lay in fog that day
But for us it was okay

We could go skiing, ride a bike
Command ourselves through pillow fights
From beds that were twice as high
as the one, that I shared with you
"You're too awkward you can't win"
I told my brother with a grin
I teased him much too much that day
So he beat my ass on mainstreet USA

Take me to the movies when it's getting hot outside
Let the air-condition freeze me as our tragic hero finally dies
It's not a cheer to tear you up
You cry a tear to cheer me up
And when we leave the cinema, everything's so light
That all we see is white white white
White white white

We can go to Tampa soon
And launch a rocket to the moon
Or we can go to Tokyo
And find the wind-up bird
The internet glows always bright
It's another place to spend our lives
And when there's nothing more to see
We fall asleep in front of the TV
And dream of comics by Piwi

Take me to the movies when it's getting hot outside
Let the air-condition freeze me as our tragic hero finally dies
It's not a cheer to tear you up
You cry a tear to cheer me up
And when we leave the cinema, everything's so light
That all we see is white white white
White white white

Juice and rubber snakes
Fish and alcohol

If you can pay
You just have to drive to the nearest Hypermarché

Socks and sodapops
Milk and daytime jobs
Bread and party snacks
Cocktails and christmas lights
That shine bright
We're open from 9am until 10 in the night

Soups and cigarettes
Blondes and brunettes

And flat computer screens
And baby toys

Moonboy

For my first christmas on the moon
In my snow-white refurbished room
I got a chinese futon bed and brand new flatscreen set
And a map of the stars
I had a heavy teenage heart
While christmas-shopping in moon mart
I was 25 years old and the gravity was low
And it felt just like 16 while jumping'

To the ceiling so high and the floodlights so bright
And the earth it hung low in the sky
I thought of the days I had a different face
And full moon would make me cry
But now I am
A moonboy with the face of a full grown moon man

Sometimes I met a wild moon cat
Who had been brought here as a pet
Had been abandoned long ago in the year of the great low
When everybody left their lives to go

Where the radio-waves grow the further they go
And the earth it hangs low in the sky
Where they can think of the times they had different minds
And full moon would make them cry
But now they are
Keeping their pets on a different star

The cat takes a nap on my old futon-bed
And the earth it hangs low in the sky
She dreams of the year me and her were new here
And both of us didn't know why
And both of us didn't know why
And both of us didn't know why

Cheese on Bread Song

Lying on the street with my back turned to the sky
I'm soaking up the heat of the day that just went by
It must have been looking like I was going to die
But I softly fell asleep as the turquoise tram drove by
Dogs they chew on bones and schoolgirls chew on gum
Old men chew on tobacco and I chew on a plum
Its sweet juice sugars every corner of my mouth
It starts to hurt my teeth, but I just wont spit it out

The supermarket's full of empty cans
Frosted flakes are lying on the floor
A girl is crunching quietly while she dances
And balloons, they keep flying out the door

Lying on the sofa with my back turned to the wall
I'm watching my TV and there's voices from the hall
Telling me to get up, to put on a clean white shirt
Saying something about war, but I probably mistook the words
As we walked through the streets, it all seemed pretty nice
The pigeons fought the rats and the cats were chasing mice
And everything looked normal except me in my dress
And as I looked and listened the voices all had left

Summer made us friends
Winter froze our hands
As we were pointing to the sky
Wondering where these birds might fly to

From "Afghan Hounds" (2010)

Gremlins

I couldn't hear it, I slept too tight
As the Gremlins sneaked in and started a riot
They came through the window and danced on the floor
Ate all of my stuff and left through the door

I dreamed I was king with long golden hair
I had two children, girl brave and boy fair
We sat on a platform watching the land
On a great concrete tower proud and thin it did stand

Walking through, the fresh paved streets,
Through the lights of the construction sites
Watching cats and meeting dogs
As time passes on your fake rolex-watch
On your pocket camera hard-drive

From "Afghan Hounds" (2010)

Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown?

Is this goodbye Charlie Brown?
My parents say, we leave town
On sunday and for good
Your sad face don't mean a thing
And you don't smile, you don't grin
I can't tell when you are down
And every time I see you I just see
A great big frown

Charlie will you take my cat
You know the one that makes you less sad
Whenever you see her
She likes to climb the cherry tree
And she likes you, doesn't she?
And she likes your dog
And she likes disappearing in the sunday
Morning fog

Where she goes
Oh Charlie I don't know
Wherever the wind blows
And wherever birds she likes
Make a sound

While she tries to hunt them down
Spreading there feathers round
All the gardens all the gardens in this town

From "Afghan Hounds" (2010)

Autumn, Winter, Spring

Little black cat by the window sill
You haven't eaten in a week and you're getting thin
But you still make that purr-fect sound when I come close to you
And when I touch your face you lift your chin

We don't know what it is that keeps you starving
But you sneak around your dishes every day
And you almost got killed
In the Tel Aviv streets
Yeah you, you came a long long way

It's like going shopping for christmas
When you buy all the things you normally wouldn't buy
Everything is wrapped up in those speacial packings
One brand's called the angels eat on high

There's oranges that came by plane from spain
There'S CTM freeze dried in Bombay
And the shopping mall was build
Some miles outs the town
When I was little I thought this was a long long way
When I was little I thought this was a long long way

We have to drill some holes so we can breath still
We have to take some bottles for our piss
And we have to make sure that no one finds us in this box
And we just have to blackout all the risk

'Cause we don't know where they might ship us to
Anything would be better than to stay
Even if it takes
A lifetime to escape
Sometimes you have to come a long long way
Yeah sometimes you have to come a long long way

Maybe you have to think of it as seasons
First there's autumn, then there's winter then comes spring
Or you have to think of it as TV
One channel they cry on the next they sing

So just wait 'til your garden starts to bloom
While you're staring too long at the screen
And if your eyes start hurting
But you see no flowers there
Maybe it just wasn't as long as it seemed
Yeah, maybe it just wasn't as long as it seemed

From "Afghan Hounds" (2010)

Woody Allen Song

All the birds fell dead down from the cedar tree
When the crashing airplane briefly struck its needle leaves
There were scratches on the paint
There was scream and death and faint
The computers said the pilots were to blame

Now everybody thinks about the reason why
They think that it's not over though they think they'll die
Maybe this is not a plane
I am dancing in the rain
And sing along to "What's My Age Again"

And my heart could swell no further
I had a premonition
Of the crash site tonight
Somewhere near the shore
Where the lightbugs glow
And whales meet up to sing
The air is calm
And the ocean is warm
And we won't feel a thing

The highway's filled with ghosts of all our friends
And you say is this really how this is supposed to end?
Oh couldn't someone come here and paint the picture right?
In the Mexicali sundown twilight night?

My ice cream slowly melts and drips on the sidewalk
On Woody Allen's face and specs painted with chalk
Right below his eyes, it looks as if he cries
And Alvy Singer took him by surprise

And I dreamed that both of them were on plain with me
And we laughed and talked and drank and watched the plain's TV
It was a lucid dream,
I smelled the kerosine
And Woody asked do you know what I mean when I say that

My heart could swell no further
I had a premonition
Of the crash site tonight
Somewhere near the shore
Where the lightbugs glow
And whales meet up to sing
The air is calm
And the ocean is warm
And we won't feel a thing

From "Afghan Hounds" (2010)

Afghan Hounds

Red is the spraypaint on my skin
The livingroom I'm living in
Red is the sunset skyline sky
A camera flashing surprised eyes

You got sick the other day
I just turned the other way
When I call you I pretend
You're okay

The leaves have fallen down covering streets
You cannot see the concrete ground
The wealthy districts dogpound wasn't locked
Now everywhere there's afghan hounds
So proud and thin they roam the streets
Children are playing trick or treat
And when i knock your door you hand me candy from
The 99 cent store

And from this wednesday to the next
I'm gonna make
This sweet cheap feeling
Last

In my left backpocket there's a photograph
That you might fimd weird
It shows you in ten years or maybe twelve
But what is sure you'll have a beard
That beard is covering
The space around your mouth
Is there the ocean
Didn't you say you're heading south

Since the day that we have moved
The fishtank from the basement
To the roof

From "Afghan Hounds" (2010)

Seven Sleepers

The morning when we stayed up 'til the break of dawn
The same morning when we thought,
We could use a walk
We got out of the house
To forget the white heat

In the cold and clean sunlight
Watched our breath turn to eyes
Felt like seven sleepers waking up
With half closed eyes
Like babies just being born

And the whole world
The whole world
Changed the close it had worn

So we came by a station where we bought some drugs
In tiny paper cups
From the first Starbucks
That opened in this town
Then we wandered around

On cold clean marble floors
Passed the automatic doors
Shopped in seven stores
On three levels
They played us fake birdsong
We lost track of time

And the whole world
The whole world
Slipped right out of our minds
Slipped right out of our minds

From "Lushly" (2017)

Lushly

A home I once had
I no longer knew
So many new angles a different view
The sky is still the sky, but upside down
There was a sound
A secret strong wave
Flickering shadow of flames in a cave
I’m just trying to be honest with
I don’t what the fuck it is I do

I want to fall in love
With a glass of water
I could drink and make a part a of me
But I fell for a cloud
Pinned to the sky
Now all I ever do is pass you by

The truth was too strange
To know it at all
We decided to stand Outside and just call
For rain for help for anything at all
How gently they took
What always was theirs, beautiful freaks
We breath the same air
Our parents are our children, is that true?
I’m blaming all of you but myself too!

I want to fall in love
With a glass of water
I could drink and make a part a of me
But I fell for a cloud
Pinned to the sky
Now all I ever do is pass you by

From "Lushly" (2017)

Smallest Sign of Change

Shots of rusty buildings
Wooden beams decayed
Commander in the sky
Let nature overtake

The passing an attraction
The saints that passed away
Parading my direction
Waiting for the smallest sign of change

Sadness like my hometown,
The finger of my crippled hand
Sadness much like family
I could try and pretend

That she don’t belong to me
Because I am ashamed
But she’s with me in every photograph
All lined up and framed

Like silent movie actors I might exagerate
When I tell you that I'm lost
That I’m about to loose my faith
But I ask you to keep me company
I need courage for the day
'Specially when the morning’s rainy 'Specially when the skies are grey

From "Lushly" (2017)

Deep Blue Sky

Hello darkness my old friend
Would you let me drown
Make me think I'm going up
When I'm going down
Let the sun with its reflections
Trick my brain and trick my eye
Deep blue sea Deep blue sky

I smoked between the sheets you warmed
And I drank by your side
Hello darkness my old friend
Won't you cure my dog day pride
The love I thought was tempest strong
Now falls apart on me
Deep blue sky deep blue
Sea blue sky

I grew breath- and motionless settling in your surge
You pulled my body on the shore
Hoped for our lungs to merge
Now every breath I'm taking
Is breathing you through me
Deep blue sky deep blue
Sea blue sea

Karl Lagerfeld’s Eyes

Everybody hustle, everybody get to work
Baby's got a new book, daddy's gotta read it first
And the light fallin' through the window Is casting a dirty shadow
Everybody hustle, everybody get to work
I fell asleep at sea

When the girl with the paper skin
Looks at you with the devil's grin
As she's putting on her furcoat late at night
You realize you have never seen Karl Lagerfeld's eyes
Karl Lagerfeld's eyes

You don't Finger on the trigger, finger on the broken screen
Director actor lover shooting the deleted scenes
And the light spilled from the projector
Turns on the smoke detector
Everybody hustle, everybody get to work I fell asleep

When the girl with the paper skin
Looks at you with the devil's grin
As she's putting on her furcoat late at night
You realize you have never seen Karl Lagerfeld's eyes
Karl Lagerfeld's eyes
You don't

Drive

The Day is hot
The night is too
You roll the windows down to breathe

Smoke rolls in
Tickles your eyes
Blurs white lines on the concrete

When you are a driver you just drive, you just drive
When you are a driver you just drive

The backseats cramped
Covered in sheets „Hey, what's the secret underneath?“
I heard you I saw you laugh You played guitar in the garage

When you are a driver you just drive, you just drive
When you are a driver you just drive

I wrote your name across the bathroom wall,
I hope you call from
Where the blacktop meets the neon light and it's always night and
You're okay
'Til then I dream about the road, the horizon and a lining of gold

When you are a driver you just drive, you just drive
When you are a driver you just drive
When you are a driver you just drive, you just drive
When you are a driver you just drive

From "Olympic Village Blues" (2015)

Sadderdays

I see your face in the rearview again
You follow me everywhere I'm going

How many roads does it take to get to the coast?
How many nights at the graveyard must I spend to shake the same old ghost?
How many demons do I have to fight? Before sadderdays go by?

You're still lost on a friday night
With your head in the clouds
Oh I hope you find out

How many roads does it take to get to the coast?
How many nights at the graveyard must you spend to shake the same old ghost?
How many demons do you have to fight?
Before sadderdays go by?

Stop! In the name of love
Stop! You might break your heart
Stop! Before you break your heart

How many roads does it take to get to the coast?
How many nights at the graveyard must we spend to shake the same old ghost?
How many demons do we have to fight?
Before sadderdays go by?

Win Win

I had a dream I lost you and I woke up again
Your hear got blown in my face by a plastic fan
I took from a hotel room to cool down our brains
These late august nights they are so hot
We put icecubes on strings and when they melt we pretend that it rains

These days everybody lies awake
Thinking about all the mistakes they are gonna make
I'd rather suck at something that I love
Than be the best at something I'm not dreaming of
I think it's not enough it's not enough

Some nights we'd go walking in the neon glow
We'd listen to a ballgame on the radio
We'd hear mosquitos buzzing, craving our blood
We bought softdrinks from some kid on the street
When we felt dizzy we asked her if she slipped us drugs and she said:

These days everybody runs around
Just to tell everyone how they'd love to slow down
Me I'd rather let the great world spin
Than be paralyzed by a pounding voice within
I think it's a win win it's a win win

Baby I don't wanna lie awake
Thinking about all the mistakes we're gonna make
Put your hand back in my hand
Come on let's fall
Let's fall asleep again
Come on let's fall

Champs-Élysées

The money we make and the hearts that we break,
The polaroids we tape to the wall
The movies we shoot, dressed up so cute
Planned out in a long distance call

You can't be everywhere hey and that's okay,
Let the sun roam to a different sky
'Cause the darker the night, the brighter the sight of the boulevard reflecting your eyes

There ain't a place, where I would rather be
Where every dream that could be dreamed comes alive for us to see
I dreamed our love would never fade
And it'll always shine as bright, as it did on that day On Champs-Élysées

The city is thick and the air here is quick,
There's plastic bags caught in a tree
But there ain't a spot on this planet we've got
That speeds along more beautifully

You can't be everywhere hey and that's okay,
Let the sun roam to a different sky
'Cause the darker the night, the brighter the sight of the boulevard reflecting your eyes

There ain't a place, where I would rather be
Where every dream that could be dreamed comes alive for us to see
I dreamed our love would never fade
And it'll always shine as bright, as it did on that day
On Champs-Élysées

Olympic Village Blues

She's got David Bowie's eyes
Looking into different skies
Wakes up singin' lullabies, she does
Run like hell is at her heels
When they ask her how she feels
She tells the cameras mighty fine

There is a thing, they can't put on the news
It's just in her mind
It is the Olympic Village Blues

Put your whole life in a box
Add some water, fake moonrocks
Light some matches, secret cigarettes
Close your eyes as the plane lands
Feel the sweat drip down your hands
Watch the people at the carousel

'Cause there is a thing, a ceratin kind of bruise
Do they know you got it too?
It is the Olympic Village Blues

You carry the fame across the land
Everybody sees you, but nobody understands
It's like the last day of a summer camp
When you are leaving as a boy but you can't come back Come Back Come Back
As a man

There is a thing, she dreams about at night
Only she knows, where it is,
It's hiding in plain sight It's nothing you could earn
Or something you could choose
But it's everything
It is the Olympic Village Blues

The Light

Sparkeling eyes of the body
Sparkeling eyes of the mind
If we keep on diving forever
We might finally see the light
And God
We might finally see us
Is it dangerous to wanna see?

Oh the light
Just above the fiery surface
Oh the light I wanna know

We didn't just try we became one
When we sank to the bottom
One moment you were right beside me
The next you were stumbling, tumbling

Oh the light
Just above the fiery surface
Oh the light I wanna know

Hold me tight
I'm loosing you now
Is it worth it?
Oh, I'm drownig in your glow
I'm drowning in your glow

Cut Me Loose

Not insane
Only lost
I swear it‘s true
I got my sticky fingers crossed

Behind my back
beyond the pines
Believe me dear
I don‘t need you to make up my lines

Hold me close in the dark
Keep me far from your heart
Cut me loose, cut me loose, cut me loose

Spin me 'round in the night
Confuse me, mess with my sight
Cut me loose, cut me loose, cut me loose

Not your friend
Not even close
Not dead yet
Still a ghost

So call the cops
Thats cool with me
I‘m happy
I allow myself to be angry

Hold me close in the dark
Keep me far from your heart
Cut me loose, cut me loose, cut me loose

Spin me 'round in the night
Confuse me, mess with my sight
Cut me loose, cut me loose, cut me loose

Oceania

I was lonlier than Jesus
And hotter than hell
When the dark of the night
Cast an uncanny spell

There was something about you
I try to recall
„Something“ in the air round you
That would resolve it all

Don‘t you know, that everybody does it
Don‘t you see that everyone‘s is asleep on this flight
When you see the slivering horizon
Hold me hold me tight

Watch my skeleton shaking
Inside my skin
Whenthe blue of the sky
Was the blue of your eyes

There is something about you
I will recall
A frequency inside your voice
Eliminating all

Don‘t you know that everybody wants it
Don‘t you see that everybody‘s dreams long to find
A gentle voice that tells you it’s not over
Hold me hold me hold me tight

Caroline

I never dream of you
The way that I used to
Everything changing now
And I'm forgetting what I new

I wanna use the ancient light
To see what matters most
If you're still around
Or if I am looking for a ghost

It's not easy
Caroline
It's not easy
To let you go this time

Honey in your black coffee
And iced tea on the kitchen floor
But all the sweetness in the world
Can't make you stick around some more

It's not easy
Caroline
It's not easy
To let you go this time

I dreamed of it as a boy
I dreamed of it as a man
It's been a long long time but I will dream again

It's not easy
Caroline
It's not easy
To let you go this time
